Supplementary Physics 3 provides Grade 11 students with a comprehensive exploration of wave mechanics and optical phenomena. Building upon foundational physics principles, this course examines the mathematical and physical concepts governing how mechanical, sound, and light energy propagate through various media. Students will analyze fundamental wave properties, boundary behaviors, superposition, and wave-particle interactions through visual models, problem-solving, and practical applications.

  • Mechanical Waves: Wave types, pulse behavior, amplitude, wavelength, frequency, and wave speed calculations.

  • Wave Boundary Behavior: Reflection, transmission, refraction, phase inversion, and energy transfer across medium boundaries.

  • Interference & Diffraction: The principle of superposition, constructive and destructive interference, standing waves, nodes/antinodes, and Huygens’ principle.

  • Light Waves: The electromagnetic spectrum, polarization, dual nature of light, and wave propagation characteristics.

  • Light Optics: Geometric and physical optics, including reflection, refraction (Snell’s Law), total internal reflection, thin lenses, mirrors, and diffraction gratings.

Light Optics
This unit introduces students to the fundamental behavior of light and how it interacts with the physical world and human perception. Students will explore how light travels, reflects off plane and curved mirrors, and refracts through different types of lenses. They will also investigate the wave-like properties of light to understand color addition, dispersion, and the rainbow spectrum. Finally, students will apply these principles to biology and technology by examining how the human eye focuses light, how vision conditions are corrected, and how optical instruments function.
